What is this Site About

Phivos PalamidisI created this site because I find that there is a great need for true photography learning and because there are very few sites that make it easy for someone who wants to learn photography, to do so.

I started with photography in the 1970s. I've been teaching photography since the early 1980s. I've seen a lot in teaching photography but at the same time I've noticed that those who work artistically in photography, very often have very little technical knowledge. It's like saying that someone who wants to be a painter has no idea how paints and brushes work.
Something similar happens in the field of photography and it is true that many times, when I see photographic works in galleries or exhibitions, I see that those who have made them, even though they are trying to give something, finally they fall short because they lack a solid technical training.

So instead of just being in the classroom, I decided to give something via the internet. I address mainly those who want to learn photography well and in depth, in order to deal with photography as an Art, which is amazingly nice. But also those who want to have a deep technical knowledge, in order to have a high level of professional training and to be able to apply what they will learn, in their professional life.

I believe that in order to advance in photography one must go slowly. It is a difficult field and like any technique, it takes a lot of dedication and effort. Just giving you recipes and presets to apply the eyes closed, gets you nowhere. My idea about teaching photography is to explain the tools, to give you a deep understanding and knowledge of them and then, confidently, you can put them into practice on your own ideas.
On the other hand I personally prefer what I call 'slow' photography. I don't really care about how many photos per second my camera can shoot nor how far my zoom can see, I'm much more interested in preparing my subject, creating my photo and most and above all, to have something to say through it. And I believe that photography as an Art can be fulfilled this way only. Work and dedication.

You will see that I am using a simple language here, I am not in any mood to claim the Nobel prize in Literature, I am addressing the whole world and maybe people for whom English may not even be their second language. So, I get it simple and easy to understand.

Finally, I would like, through these pages, to thank Daniel Arroyo-Bishop and Gérard Girard who, in the 1970s, at the Fac de Vincennes, the former for inspiring me the love for technical excellence and the latter for transmitting me the virus of the darkroom.
